Current Stable Version
Gimp now, however, comes with a standard DMG installer. OS X: GIMP is a fantastic free alternative to Photoshop for all desktop operating systems, but on Mac it was a bit of a pain to set it up. Gimp downloads its dmg, then unloads its install dirve. Double click that and you get file with the GIMP icon inside. Dragged this to the Applications folder. I got the work around for opening even though it is an unrecognized developer. DMG Master is a simple and optimized Mac OS X app to create standard DMG Disk Image Archive recognized by any Mac, with just one click. In a single file from one. Opening DMG master documents. Shows used file in the. The official GIMP 2.8 DMG installer (linked above) is a stock GIMP build without any add-ons. It works on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and later. Just open the downloaded DMG and drag and drop GIMP into your 'Applications' folder. GIMP 2.10 was released in April 2018 and is the first version of the program to feature processing with precision of 16-bit. So the DMG files we provide are.
The current stable release of GIMP is 2.10.24 (2021-03-28).

GIMP for Unix-like systems
If available, the official package from your Unix-like distribution is the recommended method of installing GIMP!
The flatpak build is new and has known limitations, though it will likely provide faster updates, following GIMP releases closely.
Therefore choose your installation medium according to your needs.
Flatpak build available in: x86-64 and AArch64 (note: i386 and ARM-32 versions used to be published, yet are now stuck at GIMP 2.10.14 and 2.10.22 respectively).
Flatpak additional instructions
The flatpak link above should open your software installer and prompt you to install GIMP. Yet it may not work out-of-the-box on some platforms since the flatpak technology is new. If that is the case, ensure flatpak is installed and if clicking the link still does not prompt to install GIMP, then manually install by command line:
flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref
Once installed, it will be made available exactly the same way as other applications (menus, desktop overview, or any specific application launch process used by your desktop).
If this is not the case, we suggest to report a bug to your desktop or distribution asking for proper support of flatpak. In the meantime, you can still run it by command line (not as the recommended method, only a workaround):
flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable
This installation will also provide regular update. You don't have to come back on this page and install again (it will not work!) when a new version of GIMP is released. Instead if your distribution and/or desktop has a good support for flatpak, it should propose to perform updates.
Once again, if your distribution does not have proper support, you can always fall back to using the following command line:
flatpak update
Systems without flatpak support
GIMP can also run on Solaris and is available for the BSD family of systems such as FreeBSD and OpenBSD.
Please refer to the documentation for your Unix-like system on the installation of software.
GIMP for macOS
Note: the currently available package provides GIMP 2.10.22 and has not yet updated to the latest version, GIMP 2.10.24. We're working on that, please check back later.

Macports
An easy way to compile and install GIMP and other great Free software on your Mac is by using Macports. The installer allows you to choose from a large directory of packages. To install gimp using Macports, you simply do sudo port install gimp
once you have Macports installed.
Last we checked, the GIMP port file pointed to the current stable release and we have reports from people who've built GIMP successfully this way.
Homebrew
Homebrew is similar to Macports and provides packages (aka formulas) to install, either by compiling them from source or by using pre-made binaries. There are indications that there is now a formula for GIMP, installable with: brew tap homebrew/cask && brew install --cask gimp
.
NOTE! Please be aware that it was announced recently that Homebrew is using analytics. To turn this off in homebrew then run: brew analytics off
You can read more about this on Brew Analytics.
Fink
Fink is a package repository that offer mostly precompiled binaries. It provides the apt-get command known to e.g. Debian and Ubuntu users, and installing GIMP is as easy as sudo apt-get install gimp
once you have installed the Fink installer.
If there's no binary package, then fink install gimp
will compile GIMP from source.
Disclaimer: we haven't been able to determine if it is possible to install or build recent GIMP from Fink. Last we checked, GIMP 2.6.12 appears to be the most recent GIMP package that is offered there.

General questions¶
Is there a company or a foundation behind GIMP?¶
No. We are a diverse group of volunteers from around the world who work on thisproject in their spare time. Code-wise most of project contributions come fromEurope where the current GIMP maintainers live. Our translators are an evenmore diverse group of contributors, since GIMP is available in80 languages/locales.
Can I use GIMP commercially?¶
Yes, you can. GIMP is free software, it doesn’t put restrictions on the kindof work you produce with it.
What’s the GIMP’s license, and how do I comply with it?¶
GIMP is distributed under terms of General Public License v3 and later. In anutshell, this means:
- You are free to use GIMP, for any purpose
- You are free to distribute GIMP
- You can study how GIMP works and change it
- You can distribute changed versions of GIMP
Note that once you distribute modified version of GIMP, you also must publishyour changes to the source code under GPLv3+ as well.
Someone sold or tried to sell me GIMP on a 3rd party website. Is this legal?¶
Yes, under terms of the General Public License this is perfectly legal, provided that the seller also gave you the source code of GIMP and anymodifications he/she introduced. Please seethis page for more information.
Are you trying to develop a Photoshop killer app?¶
No. Most generic image editors look like Photoshop simply because Adobe’sapplication was among the first image editors as we know them now, sodevelopers tend to stick to what people know — in general terms.
What we aim to do is to create a high-end image manipulation application thatis free to use and modify by everyone, ever.
Feature-wise, the proposed “high-end” status does automatically put GIMP intodirect comparison against Photoshop, but we don’t think about competitionmuch. We have too many ideas of our own to implement, and too many things toimprove before the notion of competition begins to make the slightest sense.
We do, however, acknowledge the fact that people will treat GIMP as Photoshopreplacement no matter what we tell them, and that’s all right with us. Youown this software, it’s up to you to decide how you make use of it.
I don’t like GIMP’s user interface. Why can’t you just copy Adobe Photoshop?¶
In the past, the development in the project was somewhat erratic with regardsto taking usability into consideration, which is rather typical for freesoftware projects, but inexcusable for a high-end image editor that GIMP aims to become.
Between 2006 and 2013, we worked with Peter Sikking of Man+Machine Works, aprofessional usability architect, who helped us shape the project vision forGIMP, interviews professional users to better understand their workflows anddemands, and wrote functional specifications for various GIMP features.
This collaboration resulted in major improvements ofGIMP’s usability, in particular: the rectangular-based selection/croppingtools, the unified free/polyline selection tool, the single-window mode, theupcoming unified transformation tool etc.
While working on functional specifications, Peter researched how variousfeatures are implemented in applications with a partially matching feature set(such as Adobe Photoshop), but the final design was made to help actual userscomplete their tasks as fast as possible. This is exactly the kind of approachto designing interfaces that we consider to be superior to merely copying userinteraction decisions.
I don’t like the name GIMP. Will you change it?¶

With all due respect, no.
We’ve been using the name GIMP for more than 20 years and it’s widely known.
The name was originally (and remains) an acronym; although the word “gimp” canbe used offensively in some cultures, that is not our intent.
On top of that, we feel that in the long run, sterilization of language willdo more harm than good. GIMP has been quite popular for a long time in searchengine results compared to the use of the word “gimp”. So we think we are onthe right track to make a positive change and make “gimp” something peopleactually feel good about. Especially if we add all the features we’ve beenmeaning to implement and fix the user interface.
Finally, if you still have strong feelings about the name “GIMP”, you shouldfeel free to promote the use of the long form GNU Image Manipulation Programor exercise your software freedom to fork and rebrand GIMP.
Releases¶
When do you release the next version of GIMP?¶
We release both updates to the current stable version and development versions.
We cut new updates of the stable version in two cases: 1) some newly introducedbug is knowingly affecting a lot of users; 2) the amount of improvements andbug fixes is large enough to justify an update — typically, a fewdozens of each, but there is no rule.
Currently, we are working on GIMP 3.0 that will be using the GTK+3 userinterface toolkit and feature a lot of under-the-hood work. We also backport asmany changes as possible to the 2.10.x branch so that you would get them as partof bugfix releases. We make 2.10.x releases on a regular basis, usually oncein one or two months.
Why can’t you announce dates of future releases?¶
We are a team of volunteers with day jobs, families, and personal interestsbeyond development of software. Given that, we try to avoid the situation whenwe cannot deliver a release, because something else at work/in family came up.
Instead we provide a feature-based roadmapthat roughly outlines, in what order we will be implementing various popularrequests made by users.
Aren’t you interested in doing paid development of GIMP via crowdfunding?¶
We already have jobs we love. However we actively encourage personalfundraisers by trusted contributors. There are two such campaigns running atthe moment. You can learn more about them on theDonate page.
If you are willing to launch a campaign and develop some features for GIMP,talk to us about changes you are about to propose. We’ll help you to fleshout your idea and promote it to a larger community.
Will you release GIMP for Android or iOS devices?¶
Apps for mobile devices imply a different approach to designing interfaces.Since most of GIMP’s source code is related to the user interface one way oranother, it means that we would have to design and then develop a whole newapplication. Given the current manpower, we’d rather focus on delivering agreat image manipulation program for desktop users.
However, we are interested to consult 3rd party developers willing to make afree/libre GIMP-branded image manipulation program for Android. As for iOS,please note that GIMP is licensed under GNUGPL v3+ which conflicts withApple’s Terms of Service. For a full story, please readthis articleby Richard Gaywood.
Features¶
I do not recognize GIMP’s user interface. It’s different from what I see in all tutorials. What do I do?¶
We switched to a dark user interface theme and a symbolic icon theme by defaultin version 2.10. If you absolutely want to revert it, here is what you do:
Go to Edit > Preferences > Interface > Theme
and change the theme from Darkto System.
Then go to Edit > Preferences > Interface > Icon Theme
and change the themefrom Symbolic to Legacy.
Changes will apply immediately. Click OK to confirm.
When will GIMP support HDR imaging and processing with 16bit per color channel precision?¶
GIMP 2.10 was released in April 2018 and is the first version of the programto feature processing with precision of 16-bit and 32-bit per color channel.
When will GIMP support any kind of non-destructive editing like adjustment layers, layer filters, and/or full-blown node-based editing?¶
Currently the plan is to introduce non-destructive editing in GIMP 3.2. Thisis a huge change that will require rethinking the workflow and parts of the user interface.
Will GIMP open raw (.NEF, .CR2 etc.) files from my camera?¶
Starting with version 2.10, GIMP features plug-ins for usingdarktable andRawTherapee to process raw images, as well as apreference for a default raw processing plug-in.
I do a lot of desktop publishing related work. Will you ever support CMYK?¶
Yes, better support for CMYK has been on our roadmap for a long time. One of theideas, how we want to make this work, was introduced by user interactionarchitect Peter Sikking at Libre Graphics Meeting 2009 and later —in his two-part article in his company’s blog:1,2. Pleasetake some time to read up on that.
We needed to finalize transition to the new image processing engine, GEGL,before attemtping to introduce features like CMYK support. Now that it iscomplete, initial work on CMYK support has been done in the babl and GEGLlibraries that GIMP relies on. This is partiallyfunded by the GIMP community, you can join in, too.
Once we finish some more work on color management in GIMP, it will be a goodidea to start exposing CMYK in the user interface. We have no timeline on this. Also, please note that we are not planning advanced features such as GCR supportfor now. This will most likely require a new dedicated developer in the team.
Should a new developer join the team to specifically work onCMYK-related features, we will do our best to help him/her to complete thisproject and get it to our users as soon as possible.
I don’t like some changes you introduced in recent GIMP versions, like the Save/Export separation. Why can’t you add a checkbox to disable them?¶
We realize that some changes are disruptive to some groups of users, especially those who got used to GIMP as an image editor for doing quick fixesto lossy files such as JPEG, PNG etc. (i.e. files that cannot store layers, masks, custom channels, paths).
However, adding a switch for every change we make adds numerous levels ofcomplexity that we’d rather avoid. Additionally, it would lead to dramaticallychanging the way we mean GIMP to work. Hence we respectfully disagree to makeextra behaviour switches.
At the same time, if you don’t wish to abandon GIMP completely, we recommendhaving a look at theSaver and Save/export clean plug-insby Akkana Peck, as well as at various GIMP forks on GitHub, although typicallythey aren’t maintained up to date with regards to bugfixes.
Why doesn’t GIMP use GTK+3?¶
A GTK+3 based version of GIMP is currently in the works and will be releasedas v3.0 (see the roadmap for reference).
Tips¶
How do I draw a straight line?¶
In any of the drawing tools (Pen, Pencil, etc.), click on one endpoint of theline. Then hold the shift key and click on the other endpoint.

How do I draw a circle or square?¶
Gimp Digital Painting
In the Rectangular or Elliptical selection tool, click in one corner of yoursquare or circle, then press Shift while dragging toward the other corner. Orenable the checkbox for Fixed: Aspect Ratio in tool options and make sure theaspect ratio is set to 1:1 before starting your square or circular selection.
Once you have a selection, Edit->Stroke Selection… will draw a line theshape of the selection you just made.
For curved selections, like circles, stroking with the Paintbrush paint toolwill usually give a smoother looking line. You can get an even smoother lineby converting the selection to a path (Select->To Path), then usingEdit->Stroke Path… instead of Stroke Selection…
Troubleshooting¶
My graphic tablet doesn’t work on Windows/Mac. Does GIMP support advanced input devices such as Wacom?¶

Yes, GIMP does support graphic tablets and maps pressure, stroke speed, andother events to its advanced brush engine properties. However, the version ofthe user interface toolkit that GIMP currently relies on (GTK+ 2.x) is brokenbeyond repair on Windows and Mac with regards to supporting some advanced inputdevices such as Wacom’s.
To fix this, we need to port GIMP to GTK+3 where everything mostly works asexpected. This is a work in progress.
My macOS system doesn’t let me open GIMP. What do I do?¶
We haven’t yet joined the Apple Developer Program, so the DMG files we provideare unsigned, hence the “unidentified developer” warning. Please follow theprocedure described in Apple’s knowledge base.
