There aren't that many of us who have personal brands as public as that of Jay Z. With that said, the hip-hop impresario is teaching a valuable lesson to every entrepreneur who thinks building a public personal brand isn't that important to their success.
Shawn 'Jay Z' Carter is in the process of launching a new streaming service, Tidal, which challenges the status quo of streaming media. Besides its operational challenges, Tidal has been met with early attacks trying to kill it before it takes off.
Rather than take this lying down, Jay Z took to Twitter, describing the attacks as a covert 'smear campaign' to bury Tidal during its launch period. In one tweet, which at present has 4,048 Retweets and 3,188 Favorites, he said:
'There are many big companies that are spending millions on a smear campaign. We are not anti-anyone, we are pro-artist & fan.'
In another set of tweets, Jay Z said, 'We made Tidal for fans. We have more than just music. We have video, exclusive concerts, tickets for events early, live sports!.. ..Tidal is where artists can give their fans more without the middlemen.'
In response to charges that the investment in Tidal by artists such as Jay Z, Rihanna, and Madonna is a case of the 'rich getting richer,' Jay Z responded with this tweet: 'YouTube $390 billion. Apple $760 billion. Spotify $8 billion. Tidal $60 million.'
Now, some might say that entertainers like Jay Z have the time at their disposal to tweet as often as they want, thus amassing a large following. But that logic actually misses the point in two ways. For one, Jay Z (@S_C_ on Twitter) doesn't tweet often. In fact, before 16 tweets on Sunday April 26, Jay Z had only tweeted 215 times, ever. Second, while it may be easier for Jay Z to build a strong following because of his status as an entertainer, the important thing here to note is that, just like many of you, he is a hard-working entrepreneur.
Yet even the most dedicated of entrepreneurs would have trouble facing off against a company worth $760 billion. On Sunday, the New York Post shared a report that Apple is trying to extinguish support for Tidal to improve the odds for its own streaming music service, Apple Beats Music. Mac os x dual boot. According to the New York Post story, Apple's iTunes may retaliate against artists who release exclusive content via Tidal.
While it's too early to know if Jay Z's Twitter campaign will garner enough support for Tidal to succeed, this much is certain: The enormous following he has developed gives him a better chance at success at just about anything he does.
If you want to be successful in business, isn't it worth it to use every tool at your disposal? You don't have to have the following that Jay Z does, but if you build yourself an audience--on Twitter, YouTube, at speaking events, or anywhere else--each of your business enterprises will have better odds of success.
